Response: Renovating existing buildings to tackle the housing crisis

Housing Justice Cymru has called for more to be done to renovate older buildings in order to tackle the ongoing housing crisis.

The charity said that making better use of empty properties would help to create much-needed homes and help support community growth.

Their call follows recent data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which shows that up to 120,000 homes in Wales may be empty - equivalent to one in 12 properties.

Our head of policy and external affairs Elly Lock said: “Everyone deserves somewhere safe, comfortable and secure to live, which is why Welsh housing associations are committed to making Wales a place where good housing is a basic right for all.

“Welsh housing associations are committed to exploring innovative ways to increase housing supply and deliver the much-needed homes that people need.

"This includes undertaking sector-leading retrofit projects transforming existing properties into vital housing, along with acquisitions and purchases of former social housing stock."
